Accra, Ghana – May 1, 2025 — The grounds of Lancaster University Ghana came alive as the Ghana Rugby Football Union, in partnership with the university, hosted the T-1 Rugby 7s Tournament — a dynamic, non-contact rugby event designed to inspire and empower young girls through sport.

The tournament welcomed over 20 girls, grouped into three spirited teams — Team Ruby, Team Sapphire , and Team Amethyst— who competed with energy, confidence, and growing passion for the game. After a series of exciting matches, Team Ruby emerged as the tournament’s champions.

T-1 Rugby, a non-contact variation of the sport, was introduced as a safe and inclusive way for beginners to experience rugby. It offered the girls an opportunity to explore leadership, teamwork, and self-confidence in an engaging and supportive environment.

The event also marked a significant moment of collaboration. Lancaster University Ghana generously donated GHS 3,100 to Success Rugby Academy, reinforcing their commitment to developing young women in sport and community leadership.

Adding to the celebration, the Ghana Rugby Football Union donated essential items from its loyal sponsors — including Softcare sanitary pads, Kleesoft detergent, tissues, and Kivo Gari — in support of the university’s impactful initiative. These supplies are intended to help sustain similar activities in the future and foster a holistic approach to empowering girls through sport and wellness.

Delivering her speech on behalf of Ms. Rafatu Inusah, President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union, Samira Mensah, General Manager of the T-1 Rugby 7s Tournament, emphasized the Union’s dedication to using sport as a tool for sustainable development and social transformation.
