Bolt, a prominent ride-hailing company, has urged its drivers to refrain from engaging in offline trips, especially in Kumasi, to ensure the safety of both drivers and riders. This comes in response to the increasing trend of drivers opting for offline trips due to rising fuel prices and the opportunity to negotiate fares directly with riders.
Henry Whyte, Senior Operations Manager of Bolt, emphasized the dangers of such practices. Offline trips occur when drivers accept rides without using Bolt’s app, which leaves Bolt unable to track the journey or intervene in case of an emergency. Whyte expressed concern, noting, “When a driver takes an offline trip, Bolt loses visibility of the ride, compromising the safety of both the driver and rider. In case of any incidents, Bolt will not be able to provide assistance.”

Speaking at the Bolt Driver Safety Summit in Kumasi, Whyte underscored the growing importance of safety, citing increased reports of accidents and thefts involving both drivers and passengers. The summit provided a platform to discuss new safety features, share experiences, and reaffirm Bolt’s commitment to creating a secure environment for users. Additionally, the issue of pricing was addressed, with discussions on improving driver earnings.
Amos Abakah, Ashanti Regional Director of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) stressed the importance of regulating digital transport to enhance safety. He highlighted several initiatives, including requiring operators of digital transport services to register with the DVLA, ensuring proper safety protocols are in place, and making fare systems transparent and competitive.
