Accra, February 15, 2025 – Conquerors Sporting Club’s men’s Rugby team emerged as champions of the 2025 Greater Accra Rugby Association (GARA) sevens competition, defeating Accra Rugby Club 20-0 in the final match.

The tournament, organized by the new leadership of the regional Rugby Association, took place at the Legon Rugby Sports stadium.

In the women’s category, Conquerors Ladies secured a convincing 22-0 win over Melike Ladies Rugby Club. All participating clubs received products from the sponsors.

Hajj Abudul Samad, Vice President of GARA, expressed satisfaction with the level of performance displayed by the participating teams. “The performance so far is a clear indication that the sport has grown in the country,” he said. “We, the new elected executives, are using this GARA gala tournament to build momentum and develop the game in the region.”

Hajj Abudul Samad also announced plans to introduce Rugby to schools through the “Get Into Rugby” program, initiated by World Rugby. The program aims to encourage players of all ages to try, play, and stay in Rugby. GARA will send rugby development coaches to interested schools to train sports teachers and introduce the game to students.

“Get Into Rugby is a key part of our strategy to grow the game in Ghana,” Hajj Abudul Samad said. “We want to encourage children to try Rugby in a safe and progressive environment. We believe that this program will help to increase the number of new players, coaches, and referees entering the game.”

Coach Robert Oram of Accra Rugby Club praised the tournament, saying it provided an opportunity for new players to gain experience.

“As a coach, I was not disappointed, but it’s a shame to lose the final match,” he said. “However, this kind of competition gives us the chance to play new players and give them experience.”

Conquerors player Nhyira Owusu-Ansah attributed his team’s success to their determination and hard work. “We lost to Accra Rugby Club last year, but that encouraged us to do more this year and win this tournament,” he said.

The final standings of the competition were:

Conquerors Sporting Club – 1st place

Accra Rugby Club – 2nd Place

Hunters Rugby Club – 3rd Place

Melike Rugby Club – 4th place 

Accra Majestic – 5th place 

African Warriors RFC – 6th place 

Dansoman Hurricanes – 7th place 

Idas Sports Rugby Club – 8th place
