FIFA President Gianni Infantino reaffirmed FIFA’s backing of African football during the CAF 14th Extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo on Wednesday, making a record announcement of greater African participation at the FIFA World Cup and other global competitions.
“For the very first time in history, Africa will be represented by 9 or even 10 teams at the FIFA World Cup 2026. That is double the number of African representatives hitherto,” Infantino announced.
This is a historic milestone for African football because it provides more nations with the opportunity to showcase their talent on the world’s biggest stage.

Infantino also referred to an increase in African presence at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, from three to four or even six teams. This is a growth from the youth tournaments, where Africa’s future stars can gain some much-needed international experience.
These are indications of FIFA’s recognition of Africa’s massive football potential. Year in and year out, African countries have staged amazing performances, and with increased representation, the chances of more profound tournament participations have never been better.
With growing investment in human development and infrastructure, Africa is poised to play a more prominent role in world football.
Infantino’s declaration is a sign of a bright future, with African football playing a bigger role and earning greater respect globally.
