Dangote Orders 1,000+ CNG Trucks From China’s Foton to Deepen Shift to Cleaner Logistics

Dangote Expands CNG Fleet With 1,000+ Foton Trucks in Logistics Overhaul

Dangote Accelerates Green Logistics With Major CNG Vehicle Order

Dangote Group is stepping up its transition to cleaner transport, placing a fresh order for more than 1,000 compressed natural gas-powered trucks and trailers from Foton Motor.

The agreement, signed in Beijing, builds on last year’s acquisition of roughly 4,000 CNG vehicles used primarily to distribute fuel from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery across Nigeria. The new fleet will consist of heavy-duty CNG-capable tractor trucks and semi-trailers tailored for long-haul logistics.

Beyond Vehicle Supply

The deal extends beyond vehicle delivery. It includes after-sales maintenance, technical support and collaboration on localized assembly infrastructure, signaling a longer-term industrial partnership rather than a simple procurement contract.

Senior executives from Foton attended the signing ceremony, including Chang Rui, General Manager of BAIC Group and Chairman of Foton. BAIC Group is Foton’s parent company and one of China’s largest automotive manufacturers.

Both sides underscored shared commitments to sustainable development and Africa’s energy transition, while exploring potential joint ventures and expanded cooperation in new energy commercial vehicles.

Reducing Diesel Dependence

Historically reliant on diesel-powered fleets, Dangote has faced mounting fuel costs and environmental scrutiny. The company has previously stated its intention to operate a predominantly CNG-powered fleet by mid-2026.

Compressed natural gas offers lower emissions and more stable operating costs compared with diesel, particularly for high-volume logistics networks. According to the company, the first batch of 4,000 CNG trucks delivered measurable gains in distribution efficiency and fuel savings while reducing its carbon footprint.

The additional 1,000-plus vehicles will further reinforce Dangote’s logistics backbone, supporting cement haulage, fuel distribution and infrastructure-related transport operations across Nigeria and potentially other African markets.

Strategic Alignment With Energy Policy

The fleet expansion aligns with broader efforts in Nigeria to promote gas utilization as a bridge fuel in the country’s energy transition strategy. By integrating CNG technology into heavy-duty logistics, Dangote is leveraging industrial scale to accelerate cleaner transport adoption.

For Foton, formally known as Beiqi Foton Motor Co., Ltd., the partnership offers deeper penetration into Africa’s largest economy. For Dangote, it provides access to Chinese manufacturing expertise and supply-chain capacity.

The collaboration reflects a wider trend among African industrial giants: balancing growth ambitions with sustainability objectives. As fuel costs fluctuate and regulatory pressure mounts, cleaner logistics solutions are increasingly viewed not only as environmental measures but also as strategic cost-management tools.
