Sam George’s Appointment Welcomed by FinTech Association

The Ghana FinTech and Payments Association has congratulated Samuel Nartey George on his nomination as Minister-Designate for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation.

According to the Fintech community, President John Dramani Mahama’s decision is a step toward accelerating Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.

The Association has, therefore, lauded the latest nomination since Sam George brings a wealth of experience to the table. His tenure as a communications specialist at the Office of the President between 2014 and 2016 saw him actively shaping national communication strategies.

Additionally, his role as the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram since 2017 and a member of the Communications Committee has further solidified his reputation as a key contributor to discussions on digital policies.

Noting his recent achievements, Sam George stressed the importance of continuity in digital infrastructure during the launch of Ghana’s 5G network, which he said was built on the foundation laid by President Mahama’s earlier initiatives.

The Ghana FinTech and Payments Association is optimistic about the opportunities Sam George’s leadership could bring to the sector.

The President of the Association, Mr. Martin Kwame Awagah, in an interview sighted by The Ghana Times said he looked forward to collaborative efforts, in areas such as the establishment of concise, clear, and supportive regulations and/or policies that encourage fintech innovation while ensuring consumer protection.

“Additionally, we will also be looking forward to leveraging this new portfolio to expand and enhance existing digital infrastructure like internet network connectivity (5G to be precise), and costs associated with the usage of the internet, among others. to facilitate seamless financial transactions across the country,” he noted.

The Association also emphasized the importance of collaboration between government and fintech companies to promote inclusive financial solutions and achieve Ghana’s cash-lite agenda.

Mr. Awagah further called for “strengthening collaborations to ensure adequate capacity building programs that develop the skills, necessary for a robust digital economy and stakeholders.”

The Association reiterated its commitment to supporting Sam George’s efforts to create a balanced regulatory environment that fosters innovation while ensuring security.

“We believe that through constructive dialogue and partnership, we can contribute to a regulatory environment that balances innovation with security, ultimately benefiting the broader Ghanaian economy,” Mr. Awagah said.

Looking ahead, the Association expressed confidence that the new appointment will usher in progressive policies. It is optimistic of a swift implementation of key initiatives, including President Mahama’s US$50 million fintech growth fund and the scrapping of the e-levy, both of which are expected to significantly boost the industry.
